Newsletter from Eastern Junior-Senior High School August, 2024 I hope everyone has been having a wonderful and relaxing summer break! With the first day of school just around the corner, I wanted to reach out with some reminders of procedures, and changes happening around our building. First, I would like to discuss academic and extracurricular activities available this year. Our High School now has more college credit plus and workforce study courses offered in house than at any time in school history. This is the third year of our agricultural program and we are offering courses within that program that provide students with the opportunity to learn in-demand career skills and potential college credit, AG-Science, and FFA Membership opportunities. Career education is a major component of our district mission statement, and will be a heavy focus area for students on campus while finding their “E.” As for extracurricular activities, we are proud to offer over a dozen programs for junior high and twenty for high school with many expanding beyond traditional athletics. All students are highly encouraged to participate in as many of these programs as they choose too. With the junior-high’s successful reintegration into the high school building last school year, students in grades 7 and 8 are getting opportunities to study career readiness earlier and exploration of careers is higher than ever before for middle grade students in our building. Students with work obligations who are seniors are also welcomed to meet with myself and Sheryl Roush to discuss schedule options to better accommodate them. Additionally, we have updated our grading scale and graduation policies to better support all students in our learning community. Officially beginning this school year, Eastern Local will operate on a ten point grading scale to better match that of modern college universities and other learning institutions. As for graduation, Eastern Junior-Senior High School will transition to a Latin Graduation System effective with the Class of 2028. For more information regarding the Latin Graduation System, please click the link below or copy and paste into the browser. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1sKzJPPXOKe3Fo49LBk5JhWgwSIMDDNzh/edit?usp=sharing&ouid=118283889208975724223&rtpof=true&sd=true Let’s have a wonderful year together, Garret Hall, Eastern Junior-Senior High School Principal

I am so proud of our team at Eastern Local. Their hard work and collaboration helped us once again receive grant funding this year to provide Eastern students with the classroom supplies for each grade level. We apologize for the late notice and any inconvenience, but due to the timing of the grant funding we were not able to get the message out there sooner. We are excited to be able to offer this to our students. Our hope is that helping families with this burden will allow them to use those resources to get students involved in more extracurricular activities. We know students who are engaged in more extracurricular activities here at school, at church, or in the community are more likely to have better academic outcomes, better attendance, and have more connections. We know the skills they learn and the relationships they build can have a major impact on their ability to find their "E" after graduation: Enrolled, Employed, or Enlisted. We want our students to gain the skills to be leaders in our school and community. If you have any questions, please reach out. Our plan currently, as long as our suppliers can complete the orders, is to hand out the supply kits at our open house as we did last year on August 22nd from 5:00-7:00. We are excited to see everyone there. Nick Dettwiller Superintendent Eastern Local School District 740-667-6079 ndettwiller@easternlocal.net Stronger Together
