A group recently reached out to us and asked if we had any kinship families that may be interested in helping them with their work to improve dental services for students across the state. A kinship family is described as a family where a family member such as a grandparent or other family member is the primary caregiver of a student because the parents are unable to. We currently offer dental services here at Eastern, but they are looking to expand programming across the state. They do offer $100 for families that help. I attached a flyer with information. If you have any questions you can reach out to them or I will help any way I can. Last week, Eastern Elementary and High School were lucky enough to have three therapy dogs come to visit us from the Patterson K9 Academy. At Patterson K9 Academy, they believe in the profound positive impact that therapy dogs can bring to schools. These specially trained dogs provide emotional, social, and educational support, helping to create a more inclusive and nurturing school environment. It was absolutely wonderful for them to volunteer their staff time and their dogs to visit our school! Everyone (students and staff) loved having them in our buildings! If you would like more information about therapy dogs and what benefits their visits can bring to our school, please see this additional information provided by Patterson K9 Academy. What is a Therapy Dog? A therapy dog is trained to provide comfort and companionship to individuals in settings such as schools, hospitals, and care facilities. Unlike service or emotional support animals, therapy dogs are trained to engage with groups, offering emotional stability and a calming presence. In schools, they play a vital role in reducing stress, promoting positive social interactions, and enhancing student focus and engagement. Emotional Benefits Interacting with therapy dogs has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety in students. Studies demonstrate that petting a dog can lower cortisol levels, contributing to better mood regulation, especially during high-pressure situations like exams. Therapy dogs also help foster empathy and emotional intelligence in students, as they learn to care for and connect with another living being. Educational Benefits Therapy dogs can significantly enhance academic performance by improving focus and reducing distractions. For students with ADHD or learning difficulties, the presence of a therapy dog can provide a calming effect that aids concentration. Programs like “Read to a Dog” have shown that children feel more relaxed and confident reading aloud to therapy dogs, helping to boost literacy skills and self-esteem. Additionally, therapy dogs serve as motivators, encouraging students to participate more actively in classroom activities and special projects. Social Benefits Therapy dogs encourage positive social interactions within the school environment. They help shy or anxious students feel more comfortable engaging with their peers and teachers, promoting a more inclusive atmosphere. Schools that implement therapy dog programs often see a reduction in bullying as students learn the values of kindness, compassion, and cooperation through their interactions with the dog. Overall, therapy dogs contribute to a stronger sense of community and improve overall school morale. Behavioral Benefits Therapy dogs inspire students to display positive behaviors such as patience, self-control, and respect. These qualities are reinforced through regular interaction with the dog. For children with special needs, therapy dogs offer particular benefits, such as reducing sensory overload and providing companionship, which helps students remain calm and focused.

Eastern Football wants to wish Mountain Heritage High School Football in North Carolina Good luck in their game this Saturday. MHHS hasn't got to play since Sept. 27th. Our Eastern Football players took time to write letters to their team. They raised over $400 for one MHHS team member who lost everything in the hurricane. The boys signed a football, sent good luck charms, quotes, Bible verses and other items to show them that "We Got Their Back". The boys also sent help to a player who lost his car and one players grandmother who lost her home. Thank you to all players, community members, and coaches who supported this effort!
