The Eastern Model United Nations team, including President Rylee Barrett and Delegates Rylan Weeks, Elizabeth Spires, Kayla Sellers, Cassium Powell, and Alex Collins, celebrated another successful assembly at Ohio Leadership Institute in Columbus. Team President Rylee Barrett also served as Senior State Council President, Delegate Alex Collins placed 2nd in the Current Events contest, and Delegate Elizabeth Spires received the Outstanding Leader award. The team represented Fiji in the statewide debates.
Rylee Barrett and Cassium Powell attended the Ohio Leadership Training Camp—Global Leadership 2023 during the summer to prepare for the Model UN Assembly. Rylee said about their experience, “ We came out of our shells and learned to converse with others, demonstrate self-awareness, and strategize on how we can be better leaders. I made new friends from throughout Ohio and represented our school with pride.” The Ohio Leadership Administration has selected Rylee as a staff member for next year’s assembly. He is the first state appointee from Eastern High School in our ten-year history of participating in Ohio Model UN.
Model United Nations is an authentic simulation of the United Nations General Assembly, United Nations Security Council, or other joint body, which catapults students into the world of diplomacy and negotiation. In Model UN, students step into the shoes of ambassadors of U.N. member states, from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe, to debate current issues on the Organization’s vast agenda. The students, better known as “delegates” in Model UN, prepare draft resolutions, plot strategies, negotiate with supporters and adversaries, resolve conflicts, and navigate the U.N.’s rules of procedure in the interest of mobilizing international cooperation to resolve problems.
